MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW 2024 3 We are excited to welcome you to the 2024 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show presented by Scotts. We all know the pleasures of a happy, healthy garden - the fresh scent of a clipped lawn, the rich colours of a flower bed and the hum of busy bees at work but we know the real fulfilment lies in our connection to nature, the unearthing of our creativity and the pride we feel in all we grow. We’re on a mission to celebrate our shared love of the garden and to find out just how deep this love runs, we ran a survey across Australia and the results speak for themselves; • 50% of Aussies have admitted to naming their plants • 25% regularly talk to their plants • 1 in 5 Aussies have organised a babysitter for their plants • 1 in 4 Aussies would rescue their plant from a fire Now that’s real love! LETS GROW TOGETHER SCOTTS We are proud to bring back our Scotts Growing Workshops where you can get your hands dirty, potting up an Indoor Plant that you can take home! You’ll learn everything about caring for these plant babies while we also let you in on the BIG secret that is sure to make you the best plant parent out there! We also invite you to experience theWelcome Garden in a new way by participating in one of our Scotts Mindful Moment sessions. Learn more about how you can use your backyard - or any outdoor space - to reduce stress and anxiety through a short Mindfulness &Meditation or Gentle Chi Movement session. Our love of everything green is underpinned by a 133-year legacy of excellence and as we help people find progress, play and peace in the garden we will continue to provide everything a gardener might need to roll up their sleeves and get growing. As we nourish our gardens, those gardens seem to nourish us back. We can’t wait to celebrate with you at the show, Team Scotts

20 REDUCING IMPACT We are pleased that Bio Gro, a family-owned Australian business, that actively contributes to the overall improvement of the environment is continuing its involvement with the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in 2024. With their commitment to improving environmental outcomes and social impacts through a culture of continuous improvement and sustainable innovation, they more than meet the criteria of a Sustainability Partner. Not only does Bio Gro provide mulch to many of the show gardens on display; they then divert the organic material from landfill by recovering it at the show’s conclusion. At last year’s Show, Bio Gro diverted an estimated 550m3 of organics from being sent to landfill by refining them into compost and mulch for reapplication to soils. 22 SHOW GARDENS CHRISTIAN JENKINS This years Show Garden will once again continue my journey of creating Wellness Gardens, allowing the audience to experience an overwhelming sensory experience of joy, calm and tranquility. The design is a collaboration with Margret River Trees, framed with the striking boldness of towering Bottle Trees, one of Australia’s greatest trees. In addition, the Show Garden will showcase further trees over 500 years old, celebrating their architectural brilliance in this contemporary garden setting combined with a mix of Australian Native plants. A contemporary landscape garden celebrating Australian Native Plants, limestone garden beds, decked boardwalks and a large body of water sets the scene for this Wellness Garden. The large body of water that will create a range of reflections that remind us of the mysterious wonders of nature. The garden will have a entertaining area for the friends and family to gather and eat, outdoor room for one to rest and relax, whilst the garden will take one on a journey through the space leading one to a range of sitting areas. NADIA COLE This garden is designed to have a low impact on the environment and a high impact on the people who use it. In creating this garden we are drawing on the inspiration that this country, under the custodianship of First Nations people, provides in abundance. The garden is the result of collaboration between a team of people who value biophilic design, craftmanship and sustainability ‘Drawing inspiration from the untamed beauty of the Tasmanian high country, where boardwalks meander through fields of golden grass, ash-grey trees stand sentinel, and dense clusters of lush vegetation thrive, “Australian Idyll” invites visitors on a journey further south. 23 MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW 2024 Here, amidst a landscape that feels both ruggedly wild and effortlessly accessible, this design embodies the essence of a luxurious eco-retreat. 24 PHILLIP WITHERS WITH FIONA BROCKHOFF SaltBush is an experience…of the coexistence of humans with the land, with flora, with fauna, with water, and with each other. An experience of a journey into a garden to discover what our environment means to us. An experience that inspires ongoing observation and learning and encourages humans big and small to not only appreciate, but to actively care for nature. The setting for this experience is the Victorian coastline. The journey begins in the salt coastal dunes, traverses a rocky hinterland and wetland where water is naturally filtered by aquatic plants and culminates in an inland bush setting. Here a gathering place promotes immersion, observation, connection and reflection. The garden has been constructed from recycled and local materials and consists entirely of Victorian indigenous plants which will provide habitat for local wildlife. Water treatment has been designed to balance a healthy ecological system with aesthetic objectives. LEARNMORE Together, these elements create a strong connection with the Victorian coastal natural environment. They infuse an authentic connection to place in the garden visitor; principles that can be applied to any garden small or large, urban or rural. Consideration has been given throughout the design journey as to how waste can be minimised at the conclusion of the show. SaltBush will be repurposed in Geelong and the Bellarine. MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW 2024

25 EMMALINE BOWMAN AND LIAM RILEY “Through the Looking Glass” extends an invitation to explore the concealed ecosystems beneath our feet. The intricately woven layers below the surface serve as the life force sustaining flourishing ecosystems. Our objective is to dissolve boundaries through the ‘looking glass windows,’ revealing the pivotal role of living organisms, soil, and water in nurturing microsystems. While most life below remains hidden, we highlight visible activities such as soil-living insects, mycorrhizal networks, and water-purifying bacteria. Our installation, inspired by a rural Australian theme, blurs the line between visible and unseen, emphasizing the importance of subterranean activities for a healthy environment. LEARNMORE The silent choreographer of this masterpiece is the health of the soil and water, showcased in the pond and encouraged by locally sourced materials like boulders, pebbles, logs, and aquatic plants. This design aims to exemplify a minimal impact style space, serving as both an aesthetic attraction and an essential wildlife habitat. “Through the Looking Glass” extends an invitation to explore the concealed ecosystems beneath our feet. 26 PETER DONEGAN IRELAND A Moment in Time – Presented by Daisy’s Garden Supplies, is the story of an Air Force veteran who returns to a place he hoped to be able to recall home. The garden is secluded and remains as if he had never left. The design aims to show what is when there is no head stone to one who has not fallen and, though a body is not lost, there remains a mind that can never be the same as it was prior. The garden features a fragmented path winding to an aged, grassed roof wood cabin and a Piper PA-28 Cherokee aircraft, the project that once was a wished for return to flight of a then younger man, not complete in its repair or trajectory stalled by tree growth over time, stimulated only by the turbulence of what comes with the witness of conflict. LEARNMORE Set in South-Eastern Australia in the early 1980’s, the garden intends to highlight the difficulties some veterans may face when returning to their former lives or when trying to create a new path post service in the Air Force garden small or large, urban or rural. Consideration has been given throughout the design journey as to how waste can be minimised at the conclusion of the show. SaltBush will be repurposed in Geelong and the Bellarine. 27 RILEY COOPER Gratus represents gratitude, a place to thank the people who came before us and who matter today. As a society we can take things for granted, and this garden is about celebrating the quiet achievers in our lives. The teachers, the carers, the workers – anyone who may be overlooked or forgotten in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. Gratus beckons us to stop, pause, and take a moment to appreciate everything we have in the now. LEARNMORE It’s a gathering space to take the time to care for one another and reflect on the community we share. The spa is inspired by the roman baths, designed as a lowered space to sit and converse. Likewise, the central dining area is an open table accessible on all sides to symbolise the coming together as a group from all corners of the garden. The winding garden paths acknowledge that we don’t all walk the same path, but we can all still end up in the same central point together. The garden itself is a fusion of order and chaos, there are strong angular lines as well as dynamic plant choices. The materiality of the garden is grounded with strong natural cypress timber and soft limestone paving. So often we try to tame and control our gardens, but this is an embrace of the beauty of organised chaos. We can sit back and reflect on the natural beauty without having to make sense of everything around us. MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW 2024

28 ANNIKA ZETTERMAN AND KAJSA BJÖRNE SWEDEN Hailing from Sweden, “New Nordic Notes” finds inspiration in pioneering spirits of the past, celebrating the creative legacies while embracing a sense of cultural identity and diversity. Rooted in the essence of local and traditional materials, both hard and soft landscaping elements, the garden pays homage to centuries of proven success in functionality and aesthetic appeal. By delving into the historical narratives of the surroundings and design movements, the design weaves stories that resonate with the land and its people, passing on relevant messages for generations to come. The garden includes meticulously crafted spaces that invite visitors to rest and relax, where inspiration can be found. The front decking offers a serene retreat, where one can gaze into the sky or dip their feet into a nearby stream, while a birdbath stands as a testament to our care for wildlife. In the rear, a pergola-shaded daybed beckons with distinct design patterns, centred LEARNMORE around a circular water recess symbolising the Nordic lakes. Amidst birch trees, anemones, and ferns, visitors are encouraged to write their own stories, finding solace in their “Smultronställe” –a sanctuary free from stress and brimming with inspiration. The garden unfolds with nods to Nordic traditions, from the ornamental gate that welcomes guests to the weaving hearts that adorn vertical surfaces, each handcrafted with reverence for heritage. 29 KOJI NINOMIYA JAPAN Introducing “Seisei-Tei II” by renowned Japanese garden designer Koji Nonomiya, a testament to the serene beauty of Japan’s natural countryside intertwined with the presence of human life. Embracing the essence of Japanese style while incorporating elements from English gardens, every plant and material in this masterpiece is carefully sourced from the local landscapes of Victoria. The garden’s purpose is to instil a profound sense of connection with nature, reminding visitors of our inherent place within the natural world, distinct from the constructs of human society. A harmonious blend of eastern and western influences, “Seisei-Tei II” features a tranquil cascading stream that gracefully descends from the top to the heart of the garden, enveloping visitors in a symphony of soothing sounds. As the final cascade gently settles, the water retreats, revealing a bed of white sand, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the tranquillity of nature’s embrace. 30 WURUNDJERI BIIK For the first time ever, a co-designed, Aboriginal heritage garden, Wurundjeri biik, meaning ‘Wurundjeri Country’ in Woi-wurrung language, will feature at this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden show, presented by Scotts from Wednesday 20 March to Sunday 24 March 2024. The garden, co-designed by Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Landscape Designer, Andrew Laidlaw, Suzannah Kennett Lister and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation is an invitation to consider the ecological and cultural significance of Wurundjeri land stewardship and culture, and the importance of remaining areas of native vegetation. “This garden provides an opportunity to instigate and encourage discussion, reflection and appreciation of Indigenous custodianship, Indigenous and native flora and the evolving interconnection between land, water, plants, animals and people,” said Andrew Laidlaw The new garden features three islands of planting, which represent three major plant communities within Wurundjeri Country: riparian zones and waterways, hills and foothill plant communities and drier heath forests and grasslands. Visitors will be gently guided toward a central clearing and gathering place where basalt boulders provide informal seating. Elders, Members and representatives of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation said that this garden represents the plants of their Country, which includes the inner city of Naarm/Melbourne, extending north beyond the Great Dividing Range, east to Mount Baw Baw, south to Mordialloc Creek and west to the Werribee River. “We honour our Ancestors and Elders for their strength, resilience and sacrifice as they cared for Country, and we continue that legacy today. We welcome all those who gather at theWurundjeri biik and invite them to connect to our Country through spending time in this place,”they said MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW 2024

31 THE WELCOME GARDEN, PRESENTED BY The Welcome Garden is a place for visitors to relax, plan their day at the show and participate in the various talks from top designers and growers, as well as tours that will take place regularly throughout the five days of the show. The 2024 welcome garden is designed by Melbourne International Flower and Garden show favourite Jason Hodges with over 30 years of experience in landscape design and construction. This years welcome garden is Jason’s take on the modern Australian backyard with a focus on simplicity, a sanctuary that every visitor to this years show could imagine elements in the own garden. Relaxed and low maintenance its all about unwinding with a heavy emphasis on colour and texture, softened, patterned paths with a lush green lawn under foot connects us straight away with nature. Contrasting that are straight lines and multiple Scultures giving the garden structure, the planting is to creat privacy and movement. Jason wanted to create a garden that can be enjoyed alone , as a couple, a family or the whole gang. A real welcome space for one and all. A good garden complements your life. A great garden improves it. I hope you enjoy MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW 2024
