26th March - 30th March 2025 Royal Exhibition Building & Carlton Gardens

We’re thrilled to have Shane Sipolis from Botanics of Melbourne at this year’s show, bringing his signature ‘wild and free’ floral style to a stunning hanging installation. With a love for rare orchids, rich textures, and sustainable practices, Shane’s work captures nature’s raw beauty. Don’t miss his inspired creations at this year’s show.

What’s the biggest floral trend you’re excited about this year?

This year, I’m really excited to see what I love to do most come back in “wild and free” arrangements. It’s all about mixing seasonal blooms with a more natural, untamed look. The idea is to capture the beauty of flowers as they grow in nature—less structured, more vibrant. I love the idea of working with a wide range of textures and colours, from native Australian flowers to something a bit more exotic, all mixed together in a loose and organic way.

What’s your favorite flower to work with, and why?

My favorite flower to work with has to be orchids, particularly the more rare & exotic varieties like the slipper orchid. The intricacies of their little throats, the colours & longevity of them make them a favourite of mine.

How do you incorporate eco-friendly practices into your work?

I make sure to source as many locally grown flowers as possible, reducing carbon footprints and supporting local farmers. I also try to minimize waste by reusing vases and containers and encouraging clients to recycle their arrangements after they’ve enjoyed them.

Can you share a quick tip for keeping fresh flowers looking their best at home?

A great tip is to change the water every couple of days and trim the stems at an angle under running water before placing them back in the vase. This helps prevent air bubbles from forming in the stems, which can block water absorption. Also, keep your flowers in a cool place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

If you could design a bouquet inspired by Melbourne, what would be in it?

A Melbourne-inspired bouquet would definitely have a mix of native Australian flowers like wattle, banksias, and grevillea. To capture Melbourne’s vibrant, artsy spirit, I’d also add pops of colour with my favourite orchids. There’d be some greenery like eucalyptus and ferns to represent our lush parks and gardens, creating a truly eclectic, yet distinctly Melbourne vibe.

What’s your favorite part of showcasing your work at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show?

My favorite part of showcasing my work at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show is the chance to connect with so many passionate flower lovers and fellow florists. It’s such an inspiring environment where you can exchange ideas, see cutting-edge floral designs, and celebrate the beauty of flowers. I also love the challenge of creating something truly unique that represents both my style and the energy of the event.

Where’s your favourite garden to visit in Melbourne?

I absolutely love visiting the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. The variety of plants and the serenity of the space make it a perfect spot to get inspired. I find the diversity of flora—both native and international—really sparks new ideas for arrangements, and it’s just such a peaceful place to be surrounded by nature.
